First Blush: Gilded Demon

Here is a side by side for the beginnings of a set of logos for my friend's potential land speed racing operation.  None of this has been discussed with 'er, and I'd like to keep it that way for now.  The name I arrived upon is "Gilded Demon" Land Speed Racing.  I think it nicely blends a traditional speed-demon / hot rod devil reference with a novel pointer that the operation's more about the blonde rider than the 175 twin class (Bonneville attendees will note that there was a very small number of female racers) and of course some suggestive undertones of the she-devil variety.  I know there's still a lot of shifting and ironing out to do with the text.. I suppose this could be considered my first typography experiment.  Once I'm finished with the text it'll be set back behind the drawing, its just on top while I work on it.  The shading on the demon and her bike is very preliminary.  I'll also be simplifying the sketch parts of this and juicing up the linework for high visibility on shirts and stuff.

  1. This looks awesome! Nice work on the suit design, very classy. I like the font too, I might make it a little smaller or just make to whole image taller so she and the bike can breathe a little because it feels just a little bit cramped. Looking forward to seeing the finished design

    1. Actually the thigh/crotch area of her suit was inspired by your mom's riding pants. I like the combination of functionality and aesthetics; the darker high-wear area hides discoloration from the horse (or iron horse in this case)and visually slims the legs using an axial graphic breakup. Thanks!

    2. Axial graphic breakup. I bet you could get a company to pay you to write things like that for them.

  2. Awesome line work. I dig the shoulder elements. I agree with Ian's letting it breathe comment. I guess it depends on how much you'll be setting the typeface back. The bike's rad as well. Is this "land speed operation" a goal for next year's event? After that week I wanted to build something to join the 250cc class reaalllll bad.

  3. A guy by the name of Kenny Lyon was looking for female riders this year at Bonneville, and Niki got to talking with him- he says there's no current record for a 175 twin, which is the kind of bike she's got. If she dragged her bike out there she'd have the record if she completed the run!

So all I meant was that I haven't shown her this "Gilded Demon" name idea and logo yet, but she's all about holding a record at Bonneville.
